Fabric
For all day comfort, you would want your shorts to be breathable, quick drying, water shedding and stretchy. Stretchiness or elasticity in today’ s modern fishing shorts are the norm as they provide us anglers with maximum mobility. Gone are the days when fishing was a stationary activity. We move around a lot, on foot or on boats, and we need to be comfortable in doing so, thus the need for water repellence and quick drying characteristics too. Heavy, waterlogged clothing is uncomfortable to have sticking on your skin all day and will eventually result into chafing, which is detrimental to our performance. Standard pockets on both sides and the back for your phone, keys and other essentials are a must have. The bonus reinforced tool pocket is almost a must have nowadays in the world of fishing. ‘Reinforced’ or lined with durable fabric for the tool pocket is a must, as metal tools and accessories don’ t pair well with soft and stretchy fabrics. There are options out there that offer zippered pockets which are really great for keeping the stuff inside from falling out. Just remember to wash the zips well with fresh water after the day’ s fishing to prevent corrosion.
Retention
Different waistband options for different tastes. I personally prefer the elastic waistband with drawstrings up front but when a lot of action is going on in the boat, but they tend to slip and cause embarrassment. Buttons and belt loops are a great option for good fit and security, but are not as comfortable as the surfing style board short closure systems. The board short closure system with a stretch waistband, front ties and a zipper offers the best of both worlds. Comfort and security.
Stain resistance
If you want to keep your shorts clean for as long as possible, some sort of stain resistance is recommended. If lucky, our clothing may contact a fish, and along with it its slime, blood and guts. They are a pain to remove once they dry up from sun exposure. Some look at them like battle scars, but most anglers want their stuff clean so stain resistance is a must. Most brands and manufacturers have their own stain prevention technology along with odor prevention so keep an eye out for that.

Washing machine instructions for fishing shorts
We mentioned this earlier but most fishing shorts are made from technical fibers such as nylon and polyester. In other words, it’ s perfectly fine for you to pop them into the washer! As a general rule, however, you might want to check the care label first. The first step in the washing process is to turn the shirt inside out. What good does this do, you ask? As it turns out, this is actually helpful in a couple of ways. For one thing, it will prevent the surface from wearing out; it will also make it easier to wash out the dirt and grime that’ s embedded in the fabric. Want the shirts to last longer? If so, you might want to place them in a net laundry bag as well (a clean pillowcase is a great alternative). You can wash your fishing shorts with other garments as long as the colors align. Load your fishing shirt into the washer. From there, you’ ll want to add the soap—pour in a scoop (or two scoops, depending on the size of your load) of active detergent into the dispenser. Once you’ ve done that, select a gentle setting and press start. Remember to always wash your shirts with cold water; hot water will likely cause the material to deteriorate quickly. Wait for the machine to finish the cycle before taking out your fishing shorts. Remove them from the laundry bags if necessary and line them dry. Avoid using the dryer—the shirts are not designed to withstand extreme heat; doing so will cause the fibers to wear down, not to mention that there’ s also a chance of shrinkage.
Washing your fishing shorts by hand
Don’ t want to go through the hassle of using the washing machine? No problem! How about washing your fishing shorts in the sink? It’ s not as tedious as it sounds, trust me.To begin, you’ ll want to fill a bucket or sink with water (don’ t make it too full, otherwise, you risk spilling the water later). Next, add the detergent—half a scoopful will suffice. Agitate the liquid with your hand to mix and dissolve the powder. Once that’ s done, place your fishing shorts into the mixture. You might have to press down on them to make sure that they’ re submerged fully. Let them sit for 15 to 30 minutes. Pick up the fishing shirt once the time is up. Remove any remaining debris by rubbing the fabric gently against itself. Swirl it in the solution a few times before putting it under the faucet—the goal is to rinse off all of the detergent. Remember, having leftover detergent on your clothes is never a good thing as it can irritate your skin! Transfer the shirt onto a clean towel once the water is clear; you can use it to blot off some of the excess moisture. The last step is to hang it up to dry. Once again, avoid putting your fishing shorts in the dryer at all costs!
Best way to remove stains from fishing shorts
It’ s not uncommon for fishing shorts to get stained—after all, you’ ll be dealing with floppy fish! Luckily, it’ s easy to wash them out. Fill a small bowl with warm water. Pour in a bit of detergent and mix; you should get a bubbly mixture. Dampen a cloth or soft brush and use it to saturate the problem area with the solution. The key is to soak the entire stain—apply it from both sides of the fishing shirt if you have to. Let the solution sit on the fabric for 20 to 30 minutes—that will give the detergent time to work its magic. Once the time is up, check the stain. Launder the shirt as normal if it is gone.

Additionally, utilize breathable storage bags or clothing boxes to keep your clothes clean and free from dust.

Depending on the type of clothing and space limitations, you can select the appropriate storage method, such as folding or hanging. Thicker jackets and fishing shorts can be conveniently folded to save space and avoid clothing deformation. For shirts, fishing shirts, and other wrinkle-prone items, hanging storage can help keep them flat and reduce wrinkles. Alongside proper storage methods, consider using suitable insect repellents in the storage area to prevent damage caused by insects. Additionally, for garments stored over extended periods, it is advisable to periodically check their condition and rotate them appropriately. This aids in maintaining ventilation and prevents shape distortion resulting from prolonged compression.

Why Are Fishing Shorts so Popular?
These fishing shorts easily tick all the boxes to make it a great pair for fishing. A zippered back pocket is the only other extra storage option, so its best to pair it with a sling bag when fishing. The quick drying, lightweight, stretchy and SPF rated fabric is why I consider this as a great pair for fishing. It is super comfortable and breathable, like wearing nothing. Another pair I’ ve got in my closet, fishing shorts may be my current favorite due to because of the tool pocket. They call it the triple threat tool pocket, which is a reinforced pocket with a durable lining and has a hook and loop closure to keep things from falling out. Then the rest of the pockets have zipper closures and are mesh lined for quick drying purposes. It also claims that their fabric is made with recycled fibers from Repreve, which always tickles the environmentalist in me. The standard features like water repellency, stain resistance and 4-way stretch fabric are top notch. The waistband is also very secure and comfortable.
The fabric is also very light, quick drying and is rated UPF 50. A zippered cargo pocket for pliers is also lined for durability.Standard hand pockets and 2 back pockets make for great storage for the essentials plus a couple of bags of soft plastics and a fly box. I love the stretch waistband with belt loops. It allows me to use a belt for carrying extra stuff like a knife, glove clips and rod butt pad.
