Weather conditions
The first, and most, important factor you should consider before buying a new fishing shirt is what the weather conditions are like at your favorite fishing hole. If you spend most of your time fishing in 90℉+ with little cloud cover and high winds, you are going to need a shirt with a different UPF rating, features, material, color, and breathability than someone who fishes in calm 60℉ weather. There’s nothing quite like fishing on a clear day when the sun is shining but long days on the water can turn the sun into an angler’s mortal enemy. Long sleeves are definitely the way to go, they will keep your arms protected and you can always roll them up if you want to get some vitamin D and work on your tan.
UPF rating
Wearing sun-protective clothing is all about shielding you, the angler, from the elements to maximize your time on the water while being comfortable. A shirt’s protective factor is one of the most important things to look for, especially considering how water can intensify sunlight and UV ray exposure. UPF stands for Ultraviolet Protection Factor, and is a measure of how much UV radiation a piece of clothing can block. UPF measures the total amount of UVA and UVB radiation that will penetrate the fabric of your clothing and come into contact with your skin. The higher the rating, the more UV radiation will be blocked. UPF and SPF are ratings that measure the amount of time UV rays will take to damage your skin, but, contrary to popular belief, they aren’t the same thing. Though their ratings are interchangeable, UPF applies to clothing while SPF applies to sunscreen.

Material

Colors
When considering the color of your next fishing shirt it is important to know that certain color fabrics will vary in the amount of sunlight they absorb as well as block UV rays differently. Darker colored fabrics will provide a higher level of protection while absorbing more heat, lighter colors will do a better job of reflecting heat but won’t provide as much UV protection. Breathability

What You Need to Know About Performance Fishing Shirts
Understanding UPF ratings
Sun protection fishing shirts have only recently begun to catch on with freshwater anglers, even though they’ve been popular in saltwater fishing for more than 10 years. Several million sun protection fishing shirts are sold every year. And yet, this important angler item and the UPF rating associated with fishing shirts remains widely misunderstood. UPF stands for Ultraviolet Protection Factor. It is a measurement of ultraviolet light that reaches your skin when wearing a particular garment. UPF ratings were created in Australia in 1996 following studies by a several Australian swimwear companies. When the shirt is woven or knitted it leaves small holes with no fabric to shade your skin from the sun, easily visible with a microscope. A UPF rating of 25 means that 1/25th or 4% of the sun’s rays will reach your skin. Said another way, 96% of the sun’s rays will be blocked. A UPF rating of 50 means that 1/50th or 2% of the sun’s rays will reach your skin with 98% of them blocked.
Fabrication is more important than fabric
Different fabrics do provide some sun protection advantages, but the real difference maker in a sun protection fishing shirt is the fabrication and the size of the microscopic space between the threads. In addition, factors that effect the size of that space and therefore the sun protection of the fishing shirt include weight or diameter of the thread, stretch and even color. A darker color will typically provide better sun protection because the die in the thread helps expand the diameter of the thread and therefore reduce the size of the microscopic holes between the threads. The tradeoff is that darker colors tend to trap more heat than lighter colors so the slight advantage you gain in sun protection may be overcome by not being as cool in a darker shirt.
Sun protection on the water
Sun protection while fishing is far more important than with many other outdoor activities. That’s because whether you are out on the deck of a big game fishing boat or on your bass boat at your local lake, it’s difficult to keep out of the sun. Also, the common denominator in all fishing environments is water. Water reflects the sun’s rays, so you are bombarded not only directly by the sun, but off the water as well.
As we have already noted, a fishing shirt is about the right mix of comfort and utility. A vented fishing shirt will allow for breathability while helping to cool the core. The size of this vent varies from one shirt to another. Which size you will pick would depend on what your needs are. But, to decide on the size of the vent, you should be clear about its purpose.
If you are fishing in an atmosphere that has high levels of humidity, you will sweat more. In such a situation, you will need a shirt with a larger vent. A smaller vent would serve well in a colder climate. It will limit the volume of cold air that enters your garment. Thus, it would help if you chose the vent according to your surroundings.
While some anglers prefer collared shirts that save their necks from long exposures in the sun, some prefer tee shirts. Tee shirts are convenient and quick to throw on. You will get collared and buttoned shirts in traditional button and snap styles. You can choose one according to your preference. What color of shirt you will choose would depend on your likings. But, there are some non-aesthetic implications to consider as well. The darker the color, the more heat it will absorb. When you are fishing on the water on a sunny day, the water will also reflect sun rays, adding to your discomfort. Therefore, you must choose a lighter color that will help mitigate the effect of the heat and light. If your ambiance temperature is moderate and not too discomforting, we recommend choosing a lighter color.
LUtility chest pockets
Fishing shirts will have slightly larger pockets located on the upper chest that is designed to hold a small to medium fly box. Most fishing shirts will only have two pockets, one on each side. However, some will have up to four pockets, two large pockets and two small pockets.

You can work up quite a sweat when fly-fishing. The back and forth rhythmic casting style, hiking for miles in the hip-deep water, and of course the blaring sun and added heat from the reflecting water can all raise the temperature.
